Behind the Story
The idea to write a beginner chapter book came from an author friend who was launching an alternative publishing idea through Duck Soup Press. The plan was to take a child’s story and have an experienced author expand it into a short chapter book.
Renee was invited to practise the process with a story from one of her own children, so she worked with her daughter, Molly.
The story grew from a real family season. Renee’s family had moved interstate for her husband’s military career. They were grieving the friends they had left behind while also trying to build the courage to make new friends, knowing they would probably move again in a few years.
A dream Molly had in the first few days in the new house became part of the magic. While the family was still unpacking, Renee had asked Molly to help. Molly then dreamed about a magical fairy-like person in yellow overalls who came and did the unpacking for her.
