Behind the Story
Betty Bumped Her Head was inspired by local lore about a real circus elephant in Stratford, Victoria, where Renee lives. The story says Betty bumped her head on the bridge coming into town, and there is a mural of Betty on the side of the bridge. A local history buff has also written about the true story behind the folklore. After a couple of chats with him, Renee created her own child-friendly version. There are no bridges in her story: Betty falls off the trapeze because she is not wearing a helmet.
