Behind the Story
Catching Onix began as a submission for a Romance Writers of Australia short story competition.
The competition theme was “Onyx”, which made Renee think of Onix, the Pokémon. Pokémon Go was popular at the time, and Renee was playing it a lot, so she used the game as the thing that brought the couple together.
The result was a sweet romantic comedy meet-cute where catching a Pokémon becomes the first step towards catching feelings.
