Eric's Noisy Brain

A neurodiversity picture book about thinking out loud in the classroom

Eric’s brain is so noisy he has to say his thoughts out loud. Everyone keeps telling him to stop talking.

Eric’s brain is full of noise. Saying his thoughts out loud helps him hear them properly, but the people around him keep telling him to stop talking.

Behind the Story

Eric’s Noisy Brain was inspired by actual events in Renee’s classroom.

The original version used the names of all eight students in her class, but Renee changed the names for privacy. Some of the dialogue, however, is still word for word from real classroom moments. The story became a way to show what it can feel like when a child’s thoughts are too noisy to keep inside, and how much difference adult understanding can make.
