Behind the Story
Little Lamb’s Big Day Out was inspired by actual events. One Tuesday at the end of July, a little lamb named Barry visited Renee’s school for the day. He was only two days old, wore a hand-knitted rainbow jacket and was tiny enough to fit in a disposable nappy. As Renee sat on the staff room floor waiting for Barry to feel brave enough to come closer for a photo, Beck suggested that she write a book about Barry’s adventures. That night, Renee ignored the TV and typed out a story, using the rhyming structure of Mary Had a Little Lamb. The first draft was done that night, then tweaked over the next few days as she worked on the illustrations. By the time Barry was eight days old, the book was for sale, with print copies in hand a little over a week later. The kids at school loved the repetition, rhyme and familiar characters, including Teddy the wellbeing dog and the chickens.
