The Lesson in Lying

The Lesson in Lying

The Lesson in Lying

One fake fiancé. One king-sized bed. One massive, grease-stained mistake.

Sophie Miller is a woman with a plan for everything—except how to handle her ex-boyfriend showing up with a new woman. In a moment of sheer desperation, she claims her brother’s best friend, Jack Sullivan, is her new fiancé.

Jack is Bundiundi’s favourite mechanic: rugged, hilarious, and strictly off-limits according to the "best mate" code of honour. He’s the guy who fixes your car and makes you laugh, not the guy who sweeps a primary school teacher off her feet.

But a weekend wedding getaway in the Yarra Valley changes the script. Between a "fake" kiss that sets the vineyards on fire and the gossip mill back home turning their lie into a town-wide celebration, the charade is getting messy. Now, Sophie has to decide: tell the truth and crush her pride, or keep playing the part and risk her heart to the one man she was never supposed to keep.

The Lesson in Lying is a sweet, closed-door romantic comedy featuring the brother's best friend, fake dating, and enough small-town Aussie gossip to keep you turning pages.

Tropes You'll Love

  • Fake Fiancé: One desperate lie turns into a full-blown romantic disaster.
  • Brother’s Best Friend: The one man Sophie was never supposed to want.
  • Only One Bed: A wedding getaway makes pretending a little too believable.
  • Small-Town Gossip: Bundiundi has opinions, and everyone is ready to celebrate.
  • Off-Limits Crush: Jack is charming, loyal, and absolutely not part of Sophie’s plan.
  • Wedding Weekend: Romance, awkward moments, and vineyard sparks.
  • Mechanic Hero: Grease-stained, funny, rugged, and dangerously sweet.
  • Teacher Heroine: A practical planner caught in one very impractical lie.
  • Friends to More: Familiar comfort turns into something much harder to ignore.
  • Closed-Door Romance: All the swoon, chemistry, and heart without open-door scenes.
  • Found Family Vibes: A warm circle of family, friends, and community chaos.
  • Aussie Rom-Com: Small-town humour, vineyard romance, and plenty of heart.

Behind the Story

The Lesson in Lying began with a very specific teenage fantasy: I spent years wishing I had a big brother with hot mates instead of a dorky little brother. Since real life did not provide the required dreamy brother’s-best-friend scenario, I decided fiction could fix that.

Sophie and Jack gave me the perfect excuse to play with one of my favourite romance setups: a fake relationship that starts as a panic decision and spirals completely out of control. Add in a wedding weekend, small-town gossip, a mechanic hero, a primary school teacher heroine, and one very inconvenient king-sized bed, and suddenly the lie had legs.

The fictional town of Bundiundi also has a special place in my heart. When my daughter was in daycare in Darwin, the age groups were named after Australian animals. She was in the Barramundi group, but as a toddler she couldn’t quite say it properly. "Bundiundi" stayed with me ever since, and now it has become a fictional Aussie town full of friendship, family, gossip, and love.
