Too Much Imagination

A family-created picture book about imagination, chores and things in the dark

Imagination is a good thing, right? Unless it keeps turning chores into monsters.

Amelie has one job to do, but her imagination keeps getting in the way.

Shadows become suspicious. The garage feels too dark. Something might be under the car. Too Much Imagination is a gently spooky picture book about fear, chores and learning that imagination can be both wonderful and wildly inconvenient.

Behind the Story

Too Much Imagination was inspired by both of Renee’s children during Covid lockdown.

Renee’s son had a writing assignment with the prompt “In The Darkness”. Renee, her son and her daughter all decided to write stories inspired by the prompt, and all three stories are included in this book.

Renee’s story was inspired by her daughter, who was scared of the dark. Her one chore was to clean the kitty litter and put it in the bin. The bin was in the garage, accessible from inside the house, but she always needed help turning on the garage light before going in. Renee used that real moment as the basis for the story, then wondered what might happen if something really was under the car, while still keeping it safe enough not to truly frighten her.
